In the early morning hours of yestarday, former President Donald Trump took one of his most controversial stands in direct contravention of other world leaders
While the Biden Administration ships M1 Abrams tanks and Bradley Fighting Vehicles to Ukraine, the UK sends Challenger tanks, and Germany sends Leopard tanks with Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock saying “We are fighting a war against Russia,” Trump is calling for peace.
In a post to Truth Social, Trump wrote directly,
According to The New York Times, President Joe Biden “reluctantly agreed” to send 31 of America’s next-generation battle tanks to Ukraine Wednesday after lengthy negotiations with EU leaders who refused to send their own German Leopard and British Challenger tanks without them.
In a White House press conference, Biden told reporters, “Putin expected Europe and the United States to weaken our resolve,” according to the Times. With Secretary of State Anthony Blinken and Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin III, he noted,
This is a far cry from his comments in March when he defended his decision not to send jet aircraft and tanks to Ukraine to help them repel Russia’s initial advances saying “that’s called World War III.”
He told House Democrats at the time,
Contrast this to Trump’s comments to President Volodimir Zelensky during a September 2019 State visit when he said, “I really hope that you and president Putin get together and can solve your problem. That would be a tremendous achievement.”
Russian President Vladimir Putin referred to the Russian-Ukraine conflict as a “war” for the first time in December finally breaking the Russian narrative of a “special military operation” and ostensibly called for a diplomatic solution saying, “Our goal is not to spin the flywheel of military conflict, but, on the contrary, to end this war.
We are striving for this and will continue to strive,” according to The Sun.
Even if this is a ruse or subterfuge, the fact that neither the EU, Ukraine, NATO nor the Biden Administration seems to be even entertaining a diplomatic solution is very concerning.
After U.S. officials announced the Abrams deployment, the Kremlin responded Wednesday that any Abrams battle tanks the U.S. supplies to Ukraine would “burn,” according to Reuters.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said “I am certain that many experts understand the absurdity of this idea. The plan is disastrous in terms of technology.” Adding, “But above all, it overestimates the potential it will add to the Ukrainian army. These tanks burn just like all the others.”
